Where I completely understand the reasoning behind the irritance of the everyday user and the "Caps Lock" key, how necessary is it Really to start a campaign against it? And.. if successful, how would this effect the "working society" of users versus the at home casual user?
I can definately see where the home user could benefit from the elimination of the ever so useless "Caps Lock" button. It would in fact be a perfect spot to custom program a button of your choice, even insert a smiley with your pinky while typing an email effortlessly. The working society, however, I believe would take a considerable hit by removing a key that is so necessary to many only slowly advancing industry programs.
The medical industry alone, by majority, still uses mostly "Green Screen" related processes, that require 2 & 3 letter codes to be entered for functions, accepted only in UPPER CASE. A popular car dealership and accounting program know as "ADP" also uses both reality and unix codes for functionality.
Imagine if the key were to disapear? The length of time required to type information while "holding down the shift key" would increase tremendously which would in turn lead to loss of efficiency and time for employees costing employers more money.
Where these programs are considered ancient in the real world of technology, the truth is these program designers while are indeed creating new programs with more of a "point and click" efficiency, are even in their most current releases, only beginning to take strides toward such efficient programming, therefore leaving the "caps lock" necessary at least for the time being.
A programmable key would be nice, thusfore allowing home users that don't need this small irritance of a keyboard button, opportunity to select a more efficient use of functionality on a per-person basis. Also, the standard option of "caps lock" could be left in play for the business world to utilize until no longer necessary.
With the integration of new software programs, hardware capabilities, and "superman" speed of hardware being created; with some spectacular options already on the market, I believe it won't be long before the majority of the larger business are upgraded and running in lighning fast porportion. The "small business" world however, may be a little in the lack due to the extreme impact the costs of such upgrades could impose on their business.
So, in closing I will say just this... I believe the opportunity for upgrades and conventional change to the modern keyboard is possible and just around the corner, the extremity of petitions for such an irrational movement as "CAPSoff" is a little much, don't you think?
